Teaching ESL in Japan at a Glance

Throughout the year, Japan has four distinct seasons: December to February is winter; March to May is spring; June to August is summer; and September to November is autumn. As a result, students get to take a break in between classes.

The school year starts on April 1 which is at the end of the spring vacation.Summer vacation generally lasts from July 20 to August 31. In winter, the holiday break lasts around ten days, from December 26 to around January 6 and in spring, from March 25 to around April 5. There is one basic school year for all Japanese public schools, however, private institutions and international schools have their own calendars.

Food: If you have never tried Japanese food or don’t highly rate it, you are about to change your mind. Food is their life, and that’s no surprise to us. The Japanese eat everything. They love noodles, rice, sweets, and cheeses.

Culture: Japan is world-famous for its wacky side, but despite the scantily clad anime girls on billboards everywhere you turn, Japanese people tend to be a little more reserved. The Japanese culture emphasizes respect for others, so you’ll always find them friendly and polite, sometimes to an extreme.

Jobs: Japanese people speak very little English, so they want to learn it for many reasons. It doesn’t matter which company you choose to teach English in Japan, you’ll find yourself interacting with a variety of students, whether you’re traveling for business or as a hobby.

Qualifications: Japan prefers native speakers, but it is not a requirement, so there are plenty of jobs for those whose first language is not English. You will be offered a job fairly quickly when you have a degree and a TESOL certification and are good in English. Online teaching is an excellent option if you don’t have a degree.

Visas: It is effortless to obtain a visa if you possess all the required documentation and a letter from your school confirming your eligibility. It is also easy to obtain a working holiday visa and even easier to acquire a tourist visa if you can’t get a working visa. As a result, you can easily teach online and travel around this amazing country at your leisure.

Japan is distinctly different from any country you will ever visit, and it’s not all just megacities, anime, and sushi. If you are lucky enough to teach English in Japan, you will experience a culture that is entirely different from any other on the planet, or you may want to stay for as long as possible and share the madness mixed with the mellowness.
